SuperFoods

Four foods that offer extreme nutrition

By: JESSICA JONES

“Superfoods” provide extra nutritional benefits. They are packed with nutrients, vitamins and antioxidants. Antioxidants are important because they eliminate free radicals, unstable molecules that can cause mutations in DNA and lead to heart disease, cancer and other illnesses.

Here are a few superfoods that can easily become a staple snack. They are simple enough to fit into a college student’s hectic schedule, but complex enough to deliver the nutrients many college students lack.

Dark Chocolate

Yes, chocolate! Dark chocolate is full of antioxidants—eight times more than strawberries. The darker the chocolate, the higher the cocoa content and the heavier the “punch.” Not only is chocolate good for your body, but studies have proven that chocolate increases the production of “feel good” endorphins in your brain.

Almonds

Pair that chocolate with a handful of almonds. According to a Pennsylvania State University study, one ounce of almonds contains 12 percent of daily necessary protein.

Wild Blueberries

Any fruit choice is a healthy choice, but blueberries are a great way to boost Vitamin C and potassium. (They contain more potassium than bananas.) Blueberries are “super” because they’re high in antioxidants and have heart healthy benefits. Frozen berries are as good as fresh.

Green Tea

Wash your superfoods down with a “superdrink.”  Studies have proven that green tea is a powerful aid in weight loss and cholesterol control. Green tea is especially great for college students because it offers a boost similar to energy drinks, but without all the sugar and the “crash-and-burn” effect.  Studies show that drinking tea also reduces stress.

This is just a small sample of the many superfoods–including soy, salmon, turkey, tomatoes, beans, oats and yogurt, according to WebMD.com. Earthfare, a health food and organic market at 2965 Battleground Avenue, stocks many superfoods—and they even offer a student discount.
